Man's attempts to fly higher and faster have led to new challenges for aviation scientists and engineers throughout the world. Trying to match the delicate tolerances of the human mind and body to the growing power and capability of the aircraft, has led to the new science known as aviation medicine, which deals with the effects of flight on human beings.

The programme features the extraordinary work of experts from the former RAF Institute of Aviation Medicine (IAM) who focused on overcoming such hazards as Deceleration, Motion Sickness and Underwater Escape. We see the experts subjecting themselves to rigorous tests- often at their own peril-before releasing anything for use by pilots and aircrew.

This A to Z guide includes rare footage, most of which has never been seen outside the RAE, as well as bonus features about airline passenger safety and pioneering work from the US Air Force aviation medics.
