i have a friend similar too he was born ans raised in puerto rico but when he moved to NY queens he forget everything and now he is slowly picking it back up but for him he said once he starts hearing it then he can understand just not speak it as well but he understands. dont feel ashamed i remember b4 i learned a lick of spanish i have some family who were from spanish speaking countries and everytime they talked to me i would b liek "Huh?

That's very possible. I have a friend like this. His mom used to speak to him in spanihs and her english was accented and the 2 kids grew up with a "bit" of accent. I also know a guy born in NYC whose parents are Haitian and up until a few yrs i thought he was from there. He told me he cant even understand creole
