Some say 'The English Dylan' who copied Dylan a lot. To an extent this is true, especially in his early stuff. But he was a lot more than that, much more psychedelic and jazzy. Check out albums like mellow yellow and sunshine superman, and you will see :-)

Murray Lerner did great documentary work on many concerts at Newport. I assume that he has ALL of the masters and that the performances he filmed and recorded are somewhere in their entirety. I do not have "Festival" in my possession, nor have I personally viewed it. I shall. BTW, one irritation with the film "Don't Look Back", was the truncation of critical Dylan performances by Pennebaker. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see those numbers in their entirety and not in snippets? Why, YES!

One thing which puzzles me at times is the lack of comprehensive identification as to WHO engineered many of these very remarkable Newport Folk Festival recordings. How about an indication of the exact techniqaues, gear and so on, used when making the recordings themselves? Who owns the masters? And, then there is the 1963 Carnegie Hall concert with Pete Seeger, issued on Columbia, but more recently, reissued as a TWO cd set. The sound is beyond amazing, it is STUNNING.

@Marantzguy The sound systems at the mid sixties Newport Folk Festivals were definitely excellent. The "workshops"- often really small concerts on low small stages- were such an important part of the festival and the sound was always just so excellent in my memory, i never thought about it, it was just there and you could usually hear very well. Those festivals were true magic, and the very best musicians and singers in the country were everywhere, and you could go talk to them- unforgettable.

@HelloHelicopter Definitely buy it, it's more than worth it. I only buy about one movie every three years but that one was a must have. It has no equal, clips or no clips. Another b&w folk music classic of course is Pennebaker's "Don't Look Back"- don't miss it.

Wonder why these things sound this good? Try looking at the quality microphones used on-stage! Schoeps tube mics and Telefunken and AKG C-12. The best available at that time and also some of the finest sounding recording microphones EVER MADE.

Both Bob Dylan and Donovan were just copying Woody Guthrie. (In the early years.)

I love Donovan. I'm embarrassed to say I didn't know he existed until I heard Catch the Wind in a commercial. I then looked up his music and fell in love!!! He's one of those weird sexy people. Other than the voice you really can't explain why you find him so attractive.

Joan found a new friend!
i heard that lerner's "festival" is really just a composition of short clips, such as these. and that there arnt many full recordings of songs on the film/documentary
are these the totality of all the clips from donovan on dvd? or are there more?
im just wondering because im debating whether to buy it or not
