LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Owners of the Sahara Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip say the resort will close in mid-May after nearly six decades in business.

CEO Sam Nazarian of owner SBE Entertainment Group says it doesn't make financial sense to continue operating the aging casino.

The Sahara opened in 1952 and is one of the last Strip properties from Sin City's Rat Pack era. It was featured in 1960's "Ocean's Eleven" as one of five casinos robbed by a group of World War II veterans.

Nazarian says the company is considering options for the property on the northern end of the Strip, including renovation.

He says MGM Resorts International is helping his company find jobs for affected workers and accommodations for guests who reserved rooms after May 16.

  • Instead of trying to remodel this eyesore, the owners should just implode this thing (that goes to the Riviera too), which would result in two things: 1. two implosions with fireworks and everything, and 2. it would force Carl Icahn's hand so that he can finally sell the unfinished Fountainbleau to a gaming/resort company so that it can finally be finished, plus it would probably hire the people that were displaced from the Sahara and hopefully Riviera.

  • i was at las vegas yesterday and i saw the sahara and it was abandon.

  • the sahara is a las vegas landmark, and should be treated as such. sinatra's rat pack played there many times. as for me,i never got to enjoy it as an adult, but from age 6 to 13 it was the summer vacation destination for my family. i got to run around the hotel freely while my folks gambled. this was in the late 60s,so i remember the classic look of the place. the giant S on the main tower was a vegas icon. i never got emotional when some of the other classic hotels closed. not so with the sahara

  • @NowLifeStarts Totally agree...just came back from Vegas a few days ago and I'm staying away from the beaten path of the Strip for downtown next time I come over..

  • Saw some fabulous lounge acts there (Checkmates, Kook E Jarr, and going way, way back - that's where Louis Prima and Keely Smith made the lounge the "place to be". I will really miss this place. Loved their tower with the balconies - at one time, a great view. Won a lot of money too (but put it back in, of course). RIP, Sahara, and please come back!!

  • GOD BLESS THE SAHARA HOTEL,HAD SOME OF THE BEST DAY'S AND NIGHT'S OF MY LIFE THERE!THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES,R.I.P. MY FRIEND,SINCERLY, JOE SGRO,ALTA LOMA CA.
