I've been to Oyama Senmai-da, Chiba, Japan to join rice harvesting event of a local farming NPO. I had share of rice paddy with them and had been joined some of related farming events since this May 2010. It is actually the "harvest" of these 4+ months of efforts by me (few percent) and local farmers (95%) who helped our NPO's paddies in my absent.
This is the 2nd time for me to join rice plants farming. I harvested rice plants back in 1977 or around such year as a part of elementary school activity. Of course, I don't remember how exactly that was and I need to learn how to do that.
In this video, a local farmer taught me how to harvest rice plants.
Put a rope on the ground, shear two to four cuts of rice plants into a wisp in a hand. Put them onto the rope. Shear another wisp and put them onto the previous wisp with forming "X" shape near these root (about 10 to 15 cm, or 3 to 5 inch from cut root). Repeat 2 times so that 4 wisp of rice plants are on the rope.
Tighten the rope.
These "X" shape are needed to hang them onto dry hanger.
I was so impressed from very nice work behavior of this farmer. I assume she is mid 80, but still is in very good health condition. She harvests about 3 times faster than me!

@ricepickinboi1993 Sorry but I can't understand what you mean. What is wrong part of her explanation how to harvest? At least in that area - Kamogawa, Chiba, Japan - all farmers harvest rice in this way, so I believe this is correct method.
