This is simply not true: In addition to the Mesoamerican mystics, the Phonecians and Cartheginians (Originally a Phonecian colony) sacrificed children, sacrificial rituals existed in parts of central Africa and the south Pacific islands accociated with war, and one could even make the arguement that European and American Puritan witch hunts meet the criterion to be defined as sacrifices. Also, many cultures have concepts of/similar to martyrdom, which I would say fits the definition.
