This video is about how we help our broody hens sit on a clutch of eggs and then hatch out and raise the chicks. There are 2 things I left out of the narrative. The first is that not all the broody hens will do such a great all around job of sitting and then raising the chicks so you have to test them out to see which ones have all the necessary skill and instinct. The second thing is that the broody hens are usually pretty thin after sitting on eggs for 20 days and then teaching their chicks to eat for another 45 days or so. So they have put on a lot of weight before the winter sets in.

  • hi i was wondering i have a silkie and a 1 bantam hen if the silkie went broody would i have to separate the silkie from the bantam if she went broody please reply i have being trying for a long time to find out about this thatnks if anyone nose

  • @TheJamiesjamiesjamie I am not sure I understand the question. I am not familiar with those 2 breeds but for the most part the broody hen does her thing and the other hens leave her alone. Broody hens need a a separate nesting area to brood and should not go broody in a nest box.

  • What cute little chickies! I think it's great that you are allowing nature to take its course. And I'll bet you are learning from them.

How long 'til the clutch hatches? About three weeks?

And how old are pullets before they start to lay?

I would love to know how many layers you now have, and if they provide enough eggs for your family.

    Thanks for the video!

Do you move in the fall?

  • Great Video. Keep it up. Good luck at your new place.

    Stay safe mate.
