This was my video entry for the 2009 "Wawa Hoagiefest" video contest. And it's the Grand Prize winner in the video category! This has been featured on the hoagiefest.com site since I created it in July, but I figured I'd add it to my collection here, in better quality (so you can see all the mistakes).

The music was obviously based on Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues", though I pretty much went my own way, in part to make it sound a bit more upbeat. This was recorded on a Fostex digital 8-track recorder I picked up at a yard sale, using some fairly high quality AKG mics. The guitars were recorded directly. The acoustic is a Martin D-15 with a Dean Markley sound-hole pickup, the electric is a Line-6 Variax played through a Line-6 Pod Xt Live. The lyrics are totaly original.

This was shot on a Hitachi DZ-BD70A Blu-Ray camcorder in 1080i. The compositing was done in Sony Vegas 9.0. The morphing was done using MorphBuster from SoftBusters. The Dave-sized green screen was actually a disposable table cloth from the local dollar store... I need to get a better large solution at some point. All the cue-cards were actually drawn by hand. The video was shot against the music playing at 1/3 speed, then sped up. That was largely to make it easier to drop the cards on cue.

  • THAT WAS A LOT OF PAPER!!!!!

Great vid, love it! 5 stars!

  • About 60 total cards. I ran out several large "Sharpies" writing the cards.

Dropping them on queue proved to be quite a trick... I used some special effects in the process (well, obviously the green screen) to make it a little easier.

  • hey dave I really like this film. question I have the bd 7ha too, have you had any luck importing blu ray footage then converting it for editing without burning first?

  • I always copied over the m2ts files from the BD on this camcorder. For simple stuff, I used them in my editor (Sony Vegas) directly.. no problems. For complex stuff like this, I usually converted to MPEG-2 or even lossless... some of the initial greeenscreen composites on this video took 3+ hours to render on a Quad core CPU. Of course, I did it all in HD... kind of silly, but I did.

  • Incidently, I sold that camcorder awhile ago, replaced it with a Sanyo Xacti FH1.. just the thing for fast editing. Nearly pocket sized, also MPEG-4 (though "raw" MP4/AVC/AAC, not the more standardized AVCHD). But much better in low light.. though I never had a problem with Hitachi with enough light, it wasn't great in the dark, and I shoot quite a few shows (plays, musicals, rock shows, etc).

I also have two HDV camcorders, which are fine for serious shooting, but a bit tedious.

  • Thanks. I discovered, from the first contest video, that such contests were looking for exactly that -- an ad. So I did one.. and hey, it worked!
