This version of "Ci Lang Zhou" (辞郎洲, Farewell To A Warrior) was recorded around 2003, more than twenty years after the earlier version, and performed by the First Company of Guangdong Academy of Chaozhou Opera (广东潮剧院一团).
The role of General Zhang Da (张达) is played by a much younger actor, Huang Yingwei (黄映伟). For a young actor playing a laosheng ( 老生 elderly gentleman) role, he has done a competent rendition.
In this scene, the general is on a mission to join forces with the imperial fleet which is marooned at sea. The invading Mongols are hot on their heels, but the General finds the resolve of the emperor very puzzling.
@OperafanSingapore Agree...it certainly takes years to develop that level of maturity.

Bravo; very good rendition. But his voice does not have the timbre/gravitas of a laosheng. I guess only active aging can achieve that - nothing he can do about that now.
