More and more it seems comedy is about both, really. There are life ideals hidden in comedy that make a lot of sense. Sure, a lot of the people, like you, won't take them seriously, laugh and laugh and have a good time, and continue doing the things he suggested you don't, but others enjoy getting a laugh at how stupid THEY are and then doing something about it.
If lessons can be taught in cartoons, a comedian can certainly teach them as well.
