Brumby: Box Hill is such an important hospital in our hospital system, it's such an important hospital in our region. And today I am delighted to announce that we are approving, what is the biggest single redevelopment of a suburban hospital in our state's history, a $407.5 million redevelopment of Box Hill Hospital.

Announcement of $407.5 million Box Hill Hospital redevelopment
9 December 2009

John Brumby
Premier of Victoria

Brumby: So the redevelopment that we have committed to today, $407.5 million, as I have said the largest suburban health project in the state's history by the way in real and in nominal terms. It will mean more than 100 new beds to care for around 7000 more people each year. And that includes 30 new sub acute beds which have never been available on this site before and it means that Box Hill Hospital can take even better care of our ageing population. And as you know this funding, which you have been looking forward to very much, comes on top of the $46 million that we have already invested in a new renal dialysis services, new office and research space, essential infrastructure works and a 600 space car-park. The other side of it is just what it does to our state economy and what it does in terms of jobs. And this is a very big project indeed, it starts next year and it is going to create 2,500 construction related jobs.

Daniel Andrews
Minister for Health

Andrews: This $407.5 million basically doubles the size of the current health service, going from about 31,000 square meters to about 64,000 square meters. It's not just a bigger hospital, it's not just a new hospital. There is new models of care in this, there is innovation and reform. Bringing sub acute beds, thirty of those, onto this campus for the first time ever. Giving dedicated clinicians all of the tools they need, all of the services options to be able to provide the best and most integrated care.
