For ninety nine years, Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) has taken a moment each June, on the anniversary of the death of Fire Chief David Campbell, to honor the 36 Portland firefighters who have died in the line of duty.
There will be a unique addition to the ceremony this year: one of the most cherished and revered national symbols of the post-9/11 era, the United States Honor Flag, is embarking on a multi-city tour to honor our Military and Public Safety heroes. We are honored to have the United States Honor Flag present at this, the 99th David Campbell Memorial.
This one flag has flown with our Nation's military, over Ground Zero, state capitols, the Pentagon, presidential libraries, state and National memorials, and many funerals and tributes. It honors those in public safety and the United States military who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our communities and country. The United States Honor Flag has become a symbol of honor, rich in history, inspiring a renewed spirit of American patriotism as it has paid tribute to those who have answered the call of duty and gone before us, forever remembered.
Join Fire Commissioner Randy Leonard, Fire Chief John Klum, and the Campbell Memorial Board of Trustees -- David Marshall, Worth Caldwell, Paul Corah, Terry Shanley, and Erik Gerding -- as they pay tribute to Portland's fallen heroes.
The Campbell Memorial was established in 1913 to perpetuate the memory of Portland's heroic Fire Chief David Campbell, who died in a building collapse after ordering all firefighters from the burning building. A memorial to fallen firefighters was also created, as well as an awards program to honor Portland firefighters who have performed outstanding acts of heroism while in the performance of assigned duties.
During the tribute, the 2010 Firefighter of the Year, Deputy Chief Glen Eisner, will ring the bell for fallen Portland firefighters. Commissioner Randy Leonard will present a flower wreath and bagpipes will be played by Firefighter Greg Rose. Also in attendance will be a platoon of firefighters in dress uniform and PF&R and Portland Police Honor Guard.
