The rite of ordination to the priesthood is one of the oldest in the Catholic Church. Some of the gestures practiced today were performed in the 1st century.

The rite is performed in the ordination of bishops, priests and deacons. Its always presided by bishops and it takes place between the scripture readings and the Eucharist liturgy.

It begins with the bishop calling each candidate by name and each candidate responding in Latin Adsum which means Im present.

The candidates respond to some questions or sometimes make a pledge. In the case of the future priest, they make a promise of chastity and obedience to the bishop.

Then the candidates prostrate on the floor in a gesture of humility and supplication. The people attending kneel and sing the litany of the saints, and are asked to help the candidates.

Then comes one of the most essential acts of ordination, the laying on of hands. The bishop ordains each man by laying his hands on the
candidates head.

Its the moment when the Holy Spirit descends upon the candidate through the sacramental action.

Another important act is the consecration prayer. Following these acts, the deacon becomes a priest.

Then start a series of rites called explanatory. In the case of the Episcopal ordination, the bishop anoints the head and places the mitre,
the ring and the crosier to the new bishop.

In the case of the priests, the bishop always anoints their hands with oil: because they are the hands that bless, the hands that will ordain, the hands that will consecrate. Thats why they do the anointing of hands.

The deacon on the other hand is given a Bible because he will be the minister of the proclamation of the Gospel.

The conclusion of the rite varies depending on the traditions of each country. In Spain, people approach the new priests to kiss their hands
and in Italy and Germany they approach them to receive their blessing.

  • Beautiful video. Thanks.

  • There's some new important finds in Saudi Arabia pertaining to Mt. Sinai & the 40 year wandering. An 8 year investigation by a family documented a mass grave near the mountain in question, plus almond trees, fig trees, quail that still land there, the massive split rock with water erosion, the oldest known menorah inscription, the giant golden calf altar with inscriptions, remains of the 12 pillars, & Bedouin tradition confirming it, etc, etc. Something to consider.

  • We should all be grateful for christianity in terms of all the good institutions such as red cross, salvation army etc...but what if the gov. would force individuals to give part of their individual taxes to help one another in the society? where would be the church here? so yes the church show up in history because the kings had to give too much to the nobles, and the church was the force used to fight that...and too much was taken from the people...but in nowadays, only the parliaments decide.

  • Churches are condemned, as men start to understand they are institutions controlled by the governments to educate the people as always. Now people is finally starts to pursue their values of freedom and get less afraid of religious criticism and duality about what's wrong or right. after all we all want to make a difference. There is no such thing as chosen religion.God has many aspects and anyone can approach on his own way Jesus would be sad to see the indoors theatre shows and separation.

  • @squirrelygirl816 Why the heck would you want female priests? There has never been a female priest in the Catholic Church and never will be. The day it will permit females to become priests will be the end of the Catholic Church.

  • dam where is a grenade when you need one!

  • We have a very beautiful faith!

  • Actually, in the traditional Rite, a newly ordained priest will impart his first blessing, then lay his hands open with the palms facing upward so the faithful can kiss his hands. I've only had the opportunity to do this once, but it was an awesome experience. Of course, when the old rite is served, the deacon or the master of ceremonies always kisses the priest's hand when something is handed to him or something needs to be taken back.

  • @blitzel3 I've prayed for you...and will include you in my prayers
