PLEASE READ THE DESCRIPTION!

Can anyone help me get this thing outputting a decent arc/streamer?

The output voltage seems to be lower than the input voltage from the flyback but it does light up a florescent tube wirelessly when close enough and there are very small arcs to ungrounded objects, only small and no breakout.

I have tried various different primary coils in all lengths and wire guages and I have tried adjusting the primary spark gap and capacitor(s) but it makes no difference.

It is not visible in the video, but without the topload there is a very small amount of corona coming off of the breakout point, but just no streamers.

The flyback transformer is being driven by a 555 timer based on this circuit here http://kaizerpowerelectronics.dk/wp-content/gallery/2008_11_14_-_audioflyback... , Just with a tank circuit consisting of a capacitor and spark gap on the high voltage side.

Any help would be appreciated!

Note: I now know that the reason it was not working was a combination of the secondary coil being too small and not having enough power on the primary side.

Thanks!

  • make a vertical primary with thick lamp cord wire that has eight-twelve turns with taps on the last six. make sure that the primary is withen a cm of the secondary. my coil had the same results when the pri was far from the sec. flybacks aren't good for tesla coils because they are high frequency and the caps can't charge fast enough. If you can't get a nst at least be 100% sure the flyback is puting out dc.

  • @jdflyback Thanks, I did get it working somewhat using my ZVS driver on 36v. I need to get some new flybacks before I make a video as my half-bridge driver has slaughtered all of my good ones!

  • Ok. cant wait to see what you get when you wind a new secondary.

  • @AKZak08 It may not be for a while yet but I will get around to it eventually.

  • check out my 12 watt tesla coil powered by a 555 timer driver.

  • @AKZak08 Will do.

After discussing what the problem might be with people in the comments we pretty much came to the conclusion that my secondary coil was not big enough and my input power was too low (In this video I was powering the flyback from 10 AA battery's in series). I now have two 12V 7AH sealed lead acid battery's to use as a power source and will try this again once I wind a larger secondary coil.

  • no for one not enough wire even trying to power that thing will require power from an neon. but you can get more wire and get a paper towel roll rap all the way to the top and it should work with a decent fly-back out put of at least 2 3 inches of arcs

  • use thiker wire on the primary. i it will help.

  • @Alex1M6 build a zvs, I have a 100kv flyback driver, i'll make a video off it today or tomarrow as soon as i get a new flyback, that is pusled by a uc3842 chip

  • @ubuntupokemoninc I was using a 555 timer based driver driving a MOSFET in this video, although I have never been able to get any very hot flaming arcs from it using a number of different MOSFETS.
