We eat the flesh of an animal to become filled, and our strength renewed temporarily. Jesus was trying to teach that to get himself on the inside (like in the process of eating), a man would receive not temporal life, but eternal life. He himself was the ultimate "substance" (like a food) that a man needed to take inside of himself. How? By believing
that he was sent of God, that he was the Messiah, and the Son of God, and that his words were truth. Then to become his disciple.
Christ was speaking figuratively when He refered to His body and blood, otherwise He went to the cross for nothing.

If we truly belive that the Eucharist is Jesus, his body blood soul and divinity, we should receive Holy Communion on the the tonge, while kneeling!
