Cyprus was part of a Greek state for hundreds of years, although not based on Athens of course.

All this religious Muslim/Christian stuff is so stupid as well. Just think about it. Cyprus is over 600 miles away from Greece. It has NEVER been under Greek rule through out history. Before the Ottomans arrived, it belonged to the Venetians. Turks have been on the island for over 500 years.

Cyprus belongs to the Turks. it is 40 miles from Turkey. It is not 600 miles from Greece. Greeks need to wake up. Cyprus will always belong to the Turks

The local Anatolians, near Cyprus, were Hittites, Lydians, etc. Nobody has ever said their language could have ben related to Turkic. Cypriots, led by Onesilos, joined their fellow-Greeks in the Ionian cities during the unsuccessful Ionian Revolt in 499 BC against the Achaemenid Empire. The island was brought under permanent Greek rule by Alexander the Great and the Ptolemies of Egypt following his death. Full Hellenisation took place during the Ptolemaic period, which ended when Cyprus was annexed by the Roman Republic in 58 BC. In 395 AD it became part of the Byzantine Empire.

The Mycenaean Greeks first reached Cyprus around 1600 BC, with settlements dating from this period scattered all over the island. Another wave of Greek settlement is believed to have taken place in the period 1100-1050 BC, with the island's predominantly Greek character dating from this period.
