  • mine red-rumpet parrot can sit on my hand, it is no problem for him. when he was young I just put the hand into the cage, move the finger towards his legs and he just step over on mi finger and it was done :)

  • Excellent! Lucky you. Yes, it is much easier when they are young. But Gimli is living proof that you can train your adult bird for all the ppl out there who have never tried before.

  • have you ever thought that maby he/she is only giving you 1 foot because thats all it takes for him/her to get the millet? Or is he/she still just timid.

  • She is still very hand-shy so I decided to teach her to give me her foot (like the dog-trick) to make it less scary to be around hands. To sit on my finger is a completely different "trick" and much harder for her -- we're working on that one :)

  • Yeah, I have had 4 parakeets, now have 8 because 2 of my keets got busy ;P, and i was trying to get one of the 4 (before the 4 offspring) to sit on my hand, so i used some millet. I decided to make him work a little harder for the millet, so i sat back around 3 feet, and held the millet behind a finger. He flew to it, and i let him eat the millet a few times. Then i tried it without the millet, he flew to my hand, and i didnt treat him, so he wont fly to my hand unless i give him millet.

  • Yeah, I tried that with Gimli, but she's still too hand-shy and will actually "give up" if you push her too far (she flys away). But I'm not giving up hope -- nowadays I can scratch her and stroke her and she enjoys it :) (she actually comes and sits on my computer and chirps, wanting affection). But the sitting-on-finger thing remains scary.... but with time...!

  • I've enjoyed watching it! Thanks for sharing..

  • You can get either the push-button style clicker ("i-Click") or a "normal" one.

If you have the luxury of choice I would probably recommend the i-Click one for bird training as it makes a softer click. (I wound masking tape around my clicker to muffle the click as Gimli started at the loud noise in the begining).

PS. I hope this helps Xirosama13 too!

  • You can usually buy clickers in a well-stocked pet store (usually under dog training items). But if you still can't find any for sale close to where you live you can order one. There's a great site that you can order them from (from their webshop) -- unfortunately you can't post links on here but it's clickertraining[dot]com. They also have a You Tube account as username "markkpct". I hope this helps!

  • Plz Tell me where u get that clicker =[ ive been searching for so long plzzzz...
