We were here.

After my long day working the polls as an Election Judge & my younger brother's long day of driving to Chicago from Iowa (after taking 2 exams early to be here), we made it to Hutchinson Field in Grant Park for the Obama Rally.

It was nothing short of amazing. I shot this video on my itty-bitty camera that happens to have video (hard to believe, right? ha ha). There is more footage of the National Anthem (singer messed up the words) & Barack (we were too far away & the woman in front of me, well, her hands kept getting into frame), but this is the best I could do, given what I had with which to work.

At one point, I was struck with the diversity of the crowd & how absolutely wonderful everyone was being to one another, so I thought what better way to document it than to have people tell me, "I was there," with smiles on their faces. Not one person refused. I only wish I knew all their names. If you see someone you know (or yourself), please let me know & I'll be happy to add your name here.

Thanks to my bosses for giving me the day off to work. Thanks to my younger brother's professors for letting him take 3 exams early so he could get here. Thanks for the good people of Ward 43, Precinct 17 who voted early so our jobs closing down the poll went smooth enough to get me there at a decent hour (thanks, too, to my fellow Judges of Election). Thanks to the City of Chicago for making it as peaceful as possible without seeming like we were in a police state. Thanks to the DNC for offering me the ticket. Thanks to the CTA for getting me there in one piece. Thanks to the grounds crew for a superb job of clean-up; the next day, I was back down there at work & you couldn't tell a party of this grandeur had occurred visually (you could definitely tell by the mood of the city, though). Thanks to my parents for raising me so well. Thanks to my friends who saved me a spot. Thanks to all of my other friends & family who sent texts all day/night. Thanks to CNN for providing impeccable coverage. Thanks to my neighbors on the field for being so cordial & cool. & finally, thanks to my Senator Barack Obama, for a well-fought campaign, & for inspiring so many of us; you have a hard road ahead of you, but we're behind you all the way.
