Thanh Thai, son the 3-day king Nguyen Duc Duc, was Emperor of Vietnam from 1889 to 1907 when he was deposed based on accusations of insanity. Actually, it is now known he was pretending to be mad to distract from his activities in plotting a rebellion against the French to restore Vietnamese independence. He was exiled for this but returned to Vietnam shortly before his death in 1954. He is buried in the tomb of his father near Hue.

  • Surely he could have accomplished more if he retained his position of emperor?

  • @959chris He did, he was the longest reigning emperor of the colonial period, and it was not his choice when he was deposed, it was done to him and even then he was not exiled until around 1916 or 17 when his son also tried to rebel against the French and they were both sent to an island in the Indian Ocean.

  • @MadMonarchist oh, how much power did the emperors have under French occupation, was the throne retained ceremonially to keep stability or did the Vietnamese emperors still hold power
