Onur Ataman (1977), M.Mus., was born in Istanbul. He started to play electric guitar aged 14. After taking some private lessons, he entered the Istanbul State Conservatory in 1995, to study classical piano and singing. In 2001 he moved to The Hague (NL) to study jazz guitar at the Royal Conservatory, with Peter Niewerf and Eef Albers; he also studied jazz piano with Eric Gieben. He attended several Big Band and contemporary music projects such as the Steve Reich Festival and the Maria Scheidner project, and had the opportunity to attend workshops with some important jazz musicians such as Mike Stern, Scott Henderson, Micheal Brecker and Kurt Rosenwinkel before graduating in 2005. Onur has also read a Master's degree at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (graded a 9/10 under the supervision of Philip Catherine) for which he had won a scholarship as a TOP TALENT student from the Dutch Government. Onur is presently working on his musical research within the framework of a PhD program ( DOCARTES ) at the University of Leiden (NL),the Orpheus Institute in Gent (BE) and Royal Conservatory of London (UK). His extended performing career started in 2003, when he first began working on his own ensemble and original compositions, and comprises a number of high level gigs with among others Eef Albers (2004), Dick De Graaf (2007/2008), Eric Vloeimans (2007/2008), Jeroen van Vliet (2007/2008), Guus Bakker and Pascal Vermeer (2008); since 2003, Onur performed at the European Fretless Guitar Festival (2006/2007/2008), North Sea Jazz Festival (2006), Istanbul Jazz Festival (2008), Uitmarkt Festival (2008)...
