A video dedicated to the 125th Durham Miners' Gala, aka "The Big Meeting". I was playing with my town's band this year, escorting the banner representing our local lodges. I decided to create this video to commemorate that aniversary and the part Spennymoor Town Band had in it... and also to show what a great atmosphere the Gala creates. Last year the Gala drew in 50,000 people, and this year I reckon that number was beaten... of course until the official numbers are announced that's just a guess on my part :D

I hope you all enjoy the video... and keep an eye out for a certain naughty seagull chasing a little girl, hehehehe.

On a side note, no I'm not the ginger-haired trombone player in view a lot during the bit outside the County Hotel... my mum moved in an attempt to get me into view (I was in the middle towards the back lol)

As for how things went on the day... I was this years 'casualty'... When walking to the first memorial we play at before heading to Durham, unable to see my feet because of my euphonium strapped to my front, I missjudged the height of a curb and fell flat on my face. As a result I was left looking like I'd been given a punch to the lower lip (albeit a light punch) with a rather nice bruise cropping up within an hour of my unexpected 'trip' into the land of faceplanting into a large metal instrument's mouthpiece... lucky for me I didn't knock any teeth out XD

  • whats Durham Miners

  • Durham Miner's Gala is an annual event held in Durham City, where banners representing the various collierys march into the town to the racecourse accompanied by a band. Even though all of the collieries are shut now, the event continues as a part of the region's heritage and in rememberance of those killed working in the mines.

  • Excellent video,

Just lacked a pipe band but I suppose I'm a bit biased!

    Very well done.

    JP Lumley 6th Pit Banner

  • Unfortunately the only bit of non-brass band footage I got was the bit I used in this vid, otherwise there would have been the other types of band there in the vid as well.

If I do a vid next year I will endeavour to get a wider range of footage ^_^

  • Salute the ranks of the Labour movement from the county hotel.

  • While I admit the Gala has its political side, and that I'm a Labour supporter myself, please don't put politically orientated comments on this video.

I made the video to commemorate the 125th aniversary, and to show how great a day it was... not to advertise a political party.

  • Aye you're right. and just to make my glaring error worse, I'm on the video carrying Lumley 6th banner right behind them!

Must have been distracted while I was watching the video!!

  • in fact look at the Picture on this video, at 1.07

  • Houghton Pipe band were there - there is footage of them if you look around the 2009 videos on here!

  • at the end of the day we butchered and dammned

but ttheir we are when needed

  • Only a tongue in cheek comment. I really love brass bands.

The video is excellent and once our banner is pitched on the racecourse I love to go back up to the County and the Market Place to listen to the brass bands while enjoying a well earned pint.

    Long may it continue!!
