A short film compiling footage shot on a trip to Narvik in July 2008.

Wrecks dived that week were SS Romanby, Wilhelm Heidkamp, Anton Schmitt, Hermann Künne, MS Stråssa, SS Neuenfels and Martha Heinrich Fisser.

  • Would you please tell me which wreck is the Anton Schmitt?

    Greetings from Germany

  • @Mortimerus There isn't any footage of the Anton Schmitt in this film. The majority of it was shot on the merchant cargo vessels. There's one very short clip at around 7:42 which I think was the Wilhelm Heidkamp, which was a destroyer in the same class as the Anton Schmitt.

  • My grandfather was on the Anton Schmitt in Narvik. He was a Marinesoldier at the Operation Weserübung. He told me early in the morning it was a very bad view or sight (my english....sorry). Then a big shooting began and they thought it was an attack with planes. They shot with the Flak into the sky. Then there was a big hit at Anton Schmitt an my granddad jumped into the cold water. Then the english soldiers began to shoot at the survivers in the water. My granddad is still alive and 95.

  • @Mortimerus Many thanks for sharing your family story. It's utterly unimaginable how terrifying it must have been on either side those few days in April 1940, and, though the history is always in your mind when diving the wrecks, it's totally at odds with how tranquil and peaceful the wrecks are today.

  • How is it that you only have two comments on this incredible video? Really well done! Love the professional quality of the movie and the diving is even better! Looks like a blast!

  • @aorr - thanks for the kind words. Yes, it was a pretty awesome dive trip!
