When it comes to keeping a run from coming in, the buck stops with the catcher, the protector of the base path. Trained to be a veritable wall that can halt a hulking force hell bent on getting past him, great catchers have to be able to maneuver quickly, think faster and stay on their feet even when putting themselves directly in the path of a freight train.

The Protectors, brought to you by Miller Lite, is a series of webisodic shorts that examine sports greatest defensive athletes. The series features interviews with writers, coaches and athletes from the spheres of boxing, baseball, hockey, and soccer, and includes stats and footage of sports greatest bulwarks from the start of the game through todays current guardians.

  • @Jessie7804 Yogi would tell you that Bench was the greatest . Noone had his footwork , his arm , his brain , his understanding of pitchers strongpoints and weaknesses

  • Sorry guys but Yogi was the first, the last, and the best. He started it all.

  • My baseball videos are so awesome

  • Bench was amazing. He was like a comic book super hero. He made his pitchers better through the shear force of his personality. He threw base runners out with dart like throws. He would throw behind base runners for putouts. He was the first to even attempt to catch with one hand regularly and to this day no one does it effectively like he did with those huge paws. He blocked the plate like a 80 ton rig. He hit for power like Mickey Mantle. He was the greatest catcher to ever play the position.

  • where's the tutorial?

  • @Tecumseh1812 I.Rodriguez passed J. Bench in Gold Gloves with 13

  • @dtruth20091 never saw Bench did ya .

  • Rodriguez was a roid freak for years.

  • Noone whoever saw Bench would consider Pudge even close. Pudge was the best of his era, but don't humble him by comparing him to Bench.

  • Best Defensive Catcher ever is Ivan ''Pudge" Rodriguez he has the most Gold Glove as a catcher end of story .
