A flow tube is an important part of a metalic heat transfer system for a solar collector. This is where heat is transfered from aluminum absorber plates to copper or PEX tubes. There are numerous ways to transfer the suns heat energy into a hot water heating system. This is just one method that's easy for DIYers whith wood working equiptment.
Non metalic heat transfer systems are also possible, but we'll save them for another day.

  • Is that 3/8's or 5/8's tubing you are using? I have 100 feet of 5/8 A/C copper tubing, and I an fixing to build a solar water heater system,,,I think you way is much better than what i was thinking, with all the straight pipes and tee's that would need soldering in place. Wood is much easier to work with ---- and I like you idea.

What are you going to use to cover the panel with after you finish building it? Acrylic or Glass or Plexi???? Thanks for the great video...

  • 3/8" copper tube is much easier to bend than 5/8". For glazing I recommend either kalwall sunlite or twinwall lucite..

  • Actually the hammer is used to make bends in the aluminum absorber plate. There are a number of ways to make flat plate collectors. These are just a few.

  • Real nice video-Everything explained really well and clear.

  • way to go teach... I never thought that you should weald a hammer near copper tubing? I guess that's why all of the plumbers out there carry so may hammers? I think that a verbal disclaimer should have been said telling us of the dangers of too much swinging of the hammer? Good luck...
