"Baiju Bawra" is a 1952 Bollywood movie. Made in the Hindi language and directed by Vijay Bhatt, it stars Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari.

The plot centered around music, so it was a necessity that the movie's soundtrack be outstanding. Renowned Bollywood music director Naushad and lyricist Shakeel Badayuni created memorable scores for the movie, all songs being based on Hindustani classical melodies --ragas.

Esteemed playback singers Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, and Shamshad Begum, and renowned classical vocalists Amir Khan and D. V. Paluskar lent their voices to the scores.

The result was a critically acclaimed movie soundtrack. Famous songs from the movie include Tu Ganga Ki Mouj, Mohe Bhool Gaye Sanwariya, Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj, Aaj Gaawat Man Mero, O Duniya Ke Rakhwale, and Jhoole Mein Pawan Ki Aayi Bahar....

Mohammed Rafi (Hindi: मोहम्मद रफ़ी, Urdu: محمد رفیع; December 24, 1924 July 31, 1980), often addressed as Rafi Sahib, was an Indian playback singer whose career spanned four decades and is one of the most versatile male singers in the history of Indian cinema. Rafi sang in many Indian languages including Hindi, Urdu, Bhojpuri, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Sindhi, Kannada and Telugu. He also recorded English and Persian songs. He is primarily remembered, however, for his Hindi songs, which still remain very popular in India today and also among the Indian diaspora. He dominated the Bollywood music industry from the 1950s to the 1970s along with Mukesh, Manna Dey, and Kishore Kumar.

Between 1950 and 1970, Rafi was one of the most sought after singers in Bollywood.

In 1965, he was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Sri award.

On Thursday, July 31, 1980, Rafi died at 10:50 p.m., following a massive heart attack. His last song was "Shaam phir kyun udaas hai dost" (Aas Paas), which he had recorded with Laxmikant-Pyarelal couple of hours before his death. He was survived by four sons (Saeed Rafi, Khalid Rafi, Hamid Rafi, Shahid Rafi), 3 daughters (Parveen, Nasreen, Yasmin) and 18 grandchildren. Naushad wrote on Rafi's Death- " Goonjte hai teri awaz ameero ke mahal me. jhopro ki gharibon me bhi hay tere saaz, yu to apne mousiki par sab ka fakr hota hai magar ay mere saathi mousiki ko bhi aaz tujh paar naaz hai "

Rafi's funeral procession was recorded on a very rainy day in Mumbai. A portion of that same recording has been used in one of the Hindi movie released later. It was one of the biggest funeral processions mumbai had ever witnessed, with over 10,000 people attending.

The Padma Shri Mohammed Rafi Chowk in the Bandra suburb of Mumbai is named after Rafi. Lata Mangeshkar quotes on Rafi- " saral man ke insan Rafisab, bahut suriley the, yea meri khus kismati hai ke maine unke saath sabse jada gana gaye. gana kaise bhi wo aise ga lete the ke gana na samajhne wale bhi bah bah kar utht te the. Aise gayak bar bar janam nahi lete."

A documentary about Rafis life is under production by The Films Division of India.

On September 22, 2007 a shrine to Rafi designed by artist Tasawar Bashir was unveiled in Birmingham. Bashir is hoping that Rafi will attain sainthood as a result.

  • Is the rag bhairavi?

  • i heard this song yesterday of AIR Rainbow (of course the other private radio stations were busy playing non-sense remixes which is not music really) at night. i am glad i found the video here. Rafi ji inspires not just the old generations but even youngsters like me. long live his music.

  • The whole soundtrack is musically brilliant, but this track may be my favorite. I'm always in the mood to hear this.

  • Wow!! this song I searched was on the back of my mind since I heard it when I was a kid and was so inspired. Turns out that its sung by the inevitable rafi sahab....

    Kartik Rishab Kumar...

    India...

  • Thank you my dear friend for your kind words.

By the way, we Sri Lankans here always go for 22 Carats and not for 24. I wonder why!!!

  • Acting, Lyrics, Voice and filmisation all are great makes it no. one song. 24 carats pure gold from Yuans treasure Thanks

  • Thank you my friend.

After above comment, I went through the net [Wikipedia] and learned a great deal about this. Fascinating!

  • Thank you for the nice comments.

  • In case someone wonders, by Meena's bashfulness I mean the expressions of mortification on her face as she feels embarrassed before the whole community. A rural belle has to preserve her image of modesty, after all. BB's love, no matter how pure and devoted, couldn't be that public in traditional Indian culture.

  • Indeed there are,Yuan. Many emigrated from within the Indian Jewish community, parts of it with roots going back more than 2000 years. Acclaimed character-actor David and actresses Sulochana and Nadira, for example, were Jewish. Other Indians in Israel are businessmen, scholars, etc.

  • It was this movie that launched lovely Meena, 20 at the time, into stardom. See how beautifully feminine, how naturally bashful, are her reactions to Bharat Bhushan's public expressions of undying love for her.Naushad composed some of his best work for this music, and Rafi sang some of his best songs in this movie.

Let no one disparage BB. He too had much talent. He starred as the male lead with Suraiyya, Meena, Nutan, Madhubala, Bina Roy, Suchitra Sen, Nanda-- all top actresses. Thanks, Yuan.

  • You are most welcome, my friend and thank you for your kind words.

    Take care.
