After I hung out in Berea for about an hour, me and my mom sarted working our way west down the CSX mainline, and then we found Grafton. It seems to be a nice little town with places to eat and places to find things to munch on while railfanning. The best spot to stop and watch the action is near the Main Street Crossing. That is where the CSX mainline and one of CSX's shortlines cross via diamonds. The Short line has 2 trains every day and the tower which you can see in the left of the screen in the approaching shot of the last 2 trains used to operate right next to the grade crossings. (Information creditted to 89sayers. Thanks!) It makes for good shots and that great sound of tons of goods cross the diamonds.

Train 1: Eastbound CSX at the route 82 Crossing. I have no idea what town we were in or anything like that.

Train 2: Eastbound CSX Intermodal train in Grafton

Train 3: A Northbound train on the Shortline with CSX power. I had to run around the back of the semi to get the train going around the curve! The caboose was also a nice find!

Train 4: Westbound CSX intermodal train

Train 5: Westbound CSX mixed freight

  • Very cool with the Local on the CL&W. I lived in Brunswick for 15 years (now live out of state) and never caught anything going that way. Did see a three-way meet in Lester though once!

    Nice post!

  • Thanks! I really wasn't expecting much on that line, but I saw the power refuelling and figured it'd be interesting.

  • Nice job! They finally finished their trackwork and replaced the track crossing there.

  • Thanks! And now the crossing is nice and smooth =)

  • Looks like good place!

  • Sure is =] Especially if you get some branchline action

  • How long were you there?

  • The town of the first train is North Eaton, OH. The local that passed through Grafton with the caboose is CSX D754. It runs daily between Lester and Lorain, OH.
