Back in the 90s when I was a fireman at Voorbaai shed near Mossel Bay I was given this old cine film by my old friend Otto Wilmot. I believe he made it up in the 60s. The shots are all taken around Mossel Bay's old steam shed which was removed and a new shed was built at Voorbaai where the branch to MB joined the Cape Town to Oudtshoorn mainline. As for the accident it looks like two GEA garratts were involved. if anyone knows anything about this accident then please post a comment and let us know.

  • Those pull out regulators were wonderful things. They were far more easier to control than the twist double beat regulator. As they had multiple valves controlling the steam to the cylinders it meant you could get a much better feel to the loco and much less chance of slipping etc. That one shown in the clip is unique to the GEA garratts. You will see the press/handle is on the bunker side of the main handle itself. All other SAR locomotives it was on the boiler side of the main handle!

  • Those pull-out regulators look nice to the touch. How did you find them?
