I remember watching this live. I love Vortex 2 RIP. Hopefully 10 years from now they will receive funing again for Vortex 3 this is probably the greatest tornado footage ever recorded.

@Zebrails A tornado is when the circulation extends from the cloud base all the way to the ground. Therefore if there is a funnel but it isn't on the ground, it is only a funnel cloud (note it must be rotating to be a funnel cloud- not just a low hanging appendage). Also, a dust devil isn't a tornado because the circulation isn't connected to a cloud base.

I think the most widely accepted definition of when a Funnel Cloud becomes a tornado is when the circulation actually impacts the ground. We have a hard time knowing exactly when this occurs because we have to be able to see it hit the ground. The best indicator is obviously a debris cloud like a couple of posters mentioned before. If there is lots of tree cover or major changes in elevation between the viewer and the "tornado" it is hard to tell if it has truly "become" a tornado.

The definition I grew up learning is that it's considered a tornado once there is a debris cloud visible on the ground. The condensation funnel doesn't have to be touching the ground, but the column of rotating air IS.

Like MCOEM said Vortex 2 is a project to study tornados using loads of scientists and loads of equipment all gather to chase the same storm and plant equipment near the tornado and scan it with mobile radar. The plan is to gather a huge amount of data all around the wall cloud about the tornado enviroment . See the Vortex 2 website for more info.

Them useing "Vortex" has nothing to do with the tornado. "Vortex 2" is a field study thats ongoing and this was the first tornado they had.
