Joe Ascione and Dick Cully perform a tribute to the late Buddy Rich at the National Drum Association's "Legends of Drumming" concert which included: Ed Shaughnessy, Jim Chapin, Jaimoe, Duffy Jackson, Kenwood Dennard, Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Greg Caputo, Steve Taddeo, Cody Collings, Jon Belcher, Joe Holliday, Eric Clark and Chris Kearns with the "Legends of Drumming Orchestra" on April 2, 1995 at Five Towns College, Dix Hills, N.Y. and was recorded by DRUM TV. Ironically, this was the anniversary of Buddy's death.

  • check out my vids if you like that. Feedback is more than welcome. Love these guys, play their asses off x 10.

  • Dick Cully and Art Verdi are a few who can really play a powerful single stroke roll like Buddy

Cully is playing with much more height of the stick and powerful than Joe here

Both Joe and Dick are great here

Joe has a better low finger style it appears to me

  • Joe Ascione does a great job. He's got that old-time drummer touch.

  • dretety .. you're a schmuck !

    Dick Cully is killin' !!

  • Joe was as fast and as clean as the music called for. He was also using a borroweed kit and the stage manager head forgot to put down a rug, so not only was he playing, half the time he was using one hand to pull the bass drum back. You should but the full video "The Great Legends Of Jazz Drumming." Well worth it, and I don't have any financial interest in the project.

  • Remember this was an artistic endeavor, not a sporting event. Intellect and ability combined in these performances. It was not a contest and neither of the participants acted like it was. I was the co-ordinator for this project. Both of them will blow away more than 99% of the drummers in the history of the instrument.

  • Actually it was only 500 drummers, it just sounded like 5000 when we applauded.

  • Twas a hightlite of an evening of 15 "great" drummers and a Big Band including: Jim Chapin, Duffy Jackson, Ed Shaughnessy and Marvin "Smitty" Smith, April 2, 1995 at Five Towns College, Dix Hills, N.Y.

  • very nice stuff. both masters...joe c has a youtube vid up

  • joe rocks!
