General description
This is a cluster solution that creates a new sub-urban housing typology, a response to the need to build to higher densities within countryside locations.
6 clusters provide the equivalent of 50 detached houses. 9 dwelling types are clustered together around a shared atrium. I addition each cluster has some shared living areas, such as a workshop, office, kitchen/diner.
The clusters are arranged on a traditional terrace layout with a street in front and gardens at the back. The gardens have the potential to be shared or subdivided into allotments. The street provides easy access to each cluster and accommodates car parking relatively close to the dwellings.
The site layout is stitched together by two north/south cuts: one a pedestrian footpath leading to future developments and the other a waterway also linking to the rest of the master plan.
The architectural expression is eclectic; each dwelling is distinct allowing
individual to be recognized within the collective. The construction has been considered and the clusters could achieve zero carbon rating although not in the most efficient way due to the complexity of the proposed construction.
