this may seem weird to some but this is one of my favourite performances by dessay. I always felt like Manon was to sad a character always shown as lamenting the lot that she made for her self. Dessay's Manon seems to have that important conflict between her frivolous and romantic nature and though she recieves everything that she is promised and enjoys it the conflict is still so present. I absolutly love this!

She's about 42 here...and after her vocal surgery, her high notes have become more forced, that's true. But she's undoubtedly the best Manon vocally in terms of the colouratura, trills, high notes, etc. as well as acting-wise. I believe she debuted the role in 2004.

she's good. she is. she is obviously trained.. i just feel like in some parts her vibrato is.. forced? but her melismas, trills and high notes have power. how old is she in this? i know she debuted this role else where, and this performance is a lot better than her first.

Il n'empêche que Miss Dessay n'est pas Manon du tout ! manon n'est pas Zerbinetta ou Adèle ! C'est une courtisane ! Cela veut dire une personne qui veut s'élever dans la Haute Société de l'époque ! De toutes façons elle n'a jamais pu être vocalement à son aise dans l'Acte de St Sulpice qui est de loin le plus beau et le plus important de tout Manon ! Et son jeu manque vraiment de tenue !

It is very interesting to see this now after seeing her debut in the role in your other video. It shows how much she has changed in 5 short years. Though her voice is a lot sweeter in the first video she is (IMHO) at her best here. Her vocal skill is used expertly and with more confidence here to give a very well rounded performance. In every detail this rendition is more moving and truer to the overall pathos of Manon. Genius.
