FF IX Excalibur II Perfect Game - Part 31: Defeating Griffin

Defeating all the weapon shop monsters is another requirement of the perfect game, even though the reward for this battle is useless. This is one of my better performances in the menus. It will take a while to read all this so if you just want to take my word on it that's cool too...

5 Mythril Sword - Steiner is the only one who can equip this so the final perfect amount is 2, but they are also used to synth Grand Armors, of which the perfect amount is 3.
5 Air Racket- These are synthed with a Cachusha to make a Priest Racket. We need 3 of each, Garnet/Eiko/inventory, and we find an Air Racket in Ipsen's Castle.

2 Bone Wrist, 1 Mythril Gloves, 1 Magus Hat, 2 Bandana, and 2 Barbut just because I want them. Bandanas are missable and used to synth Silk Robes but we don't want to buy them all just yet, you need to buy 9 total but the others can wait.

14 Chain Mail - Pay attention because this is tricky: Chain Mails synth into Power Belts, Power Belts synth into Grand Helms. It's always best to start at the end and work your way back.
Grand Helm- Steiner + Freya + extra = 3
Power Belt- (Gr. Helm x3 + everyone x8) + (extra - we just got one) = 11
Chain Mail- Pwr Blt x11 + (Steiner + Freya + extra) = 14

After all that: back row, optimize, Hp+10%, MP Attack, Bird Killer. Throw a Tent, if it hits you've basically won the battle.

I hate that Moogle in Treno, it's impossible to catch him.

Just outta curiousity, how come you haven't got the Blood Sword equipped for that battle? I know you've shown that it isn't needed to beat the Griffin, but you can have the Blood Sword by that point in the game. I'm probably missing something because I'm stupid like that, but I'm just curious.

Simply, because you need to get four Stellazios and trade them in to get the Blood Sword, which takes more time than it would save. Very soon you just get the Ice Brand, which is stronger than the Blood Sword, so you'd only get to use it against Griffin and Ralvuimago, and the couple turns it saves isn't enough to make up for the extra minute or two spent dealing with the Stellazios.

i might try this challenge one day but i have a pal version and i am not sure if i can get an NTSC in the shops anymore is it possible to just obtain excalibur 2 without a perfect game on the pal version though?

Excalibur II without the perfect game is definitely possible in PAL.

You can get them all on Disc 4, which is why he decided to skip them. If any of them were missable, then obviously he would have to collect them.

he's not doing this on an emulator....the basic trick is to go through the shop at normal speed, know what you need to do, soft reset, then do it again, faster that time. takes loads of practice!

yeah i'm also playing FF9 emulated but i can't manage to get 100 nobles to be impressed at the beginning.
