Trees for Zambia - a project by Greenpop (http://www.greenpop.org/projects/trees-for-zambia/)
Help sponsor Trees for Zambia - a project that will see 5,000 to 10,000 trees planted in and around Livingstone, Zambia -- the country with the second highest deforestation rate in the world!
Be part of this exciting reforestation and conservation education initiative.
Trees for Zambia - our mission for the initial 3-week campaign in July 2012:
• Start reforestation to replace the pioneer trees, allowing for new growth and regeneration of rich soil content
• Develop a culture of planting trees within communities through conservation education, and by teaching people how to plant and look after trees
• Educate children on their natural environment, and help feed them by planting fruit trees at under-privileged schools
• Promote conservation farming methods in the local community that will stop erosion and soil degradation, and create more cost-efficient farms
• Start a micro tree nursery enterprise at a selected number of subsistence farms, so that we can provide farmers with an additional income by buying trees from them
Sustainability of the Project
In order to make this project sustainable, it is essential to have the local community involved in and benefiting from our efforts. The main way of ensuring this is through education. We are working with education experts to develop the most suitable and enjoyable educational material for both school children and subsistence farmers. Through our workshops, the local community will learn how trees can benefit them, whether it's by using them for food security, knowing how to identify trees with with best shade, or using them as natural fertilisers on their land. In addition, we ensure local community members profit from the trees through our micro-nursery enterprise. Farmers will have a considerable additional income through this venture.
After our initial three-week project, we will establish a permanent base in Livingstone so that we can continue our greening and educational efforts. Our long-term aims are to:
• organise a similar large-scale planting and conservation education action conference annually
• establish an on-going small-scale project, through which we continually plant trees, educate children on conservation issues, promote conservation farming methods, and monitor and further develop our micro-nursery enterprise.
Sponsorship
Greenpop is looking for sponsorship for 5,000 to 10,000 trees. Trees cost USD15 or ZAR120 each and include all the planting logistics and materials. The trees are growing in a nursery in Livingstone already.
For companies wanting to sponsor this project, we also offer valuable positive PR and media additions.
