it refers to the concept that a "butterfly flapping its wings in one part of the world could ultimatly cause a tornado or something liek that, some where else"

basically a small thing could eventually end up making a large difference.

It was known as the butterfly effect.

It's an offshoot of the Chaos Theory. Basically everything is effected by everything. You can't do something, then repeat it and have it have the same result. If you put a drop of water on your hand it may go one way or another. Repeating the experiment will have different results. Everything is random, nothing is the same.

But another offshoot makes use of Fractal Geometry, stating things at large scale are the same as small scale, often citing cotton prices or mountains as proof.
