@BATENKILL Yes I like J. D. too. But some of my banjo friends tell me he sounds too much like Earl Scruggs. And if you check out OLD Flatt and Scruggs videos here on YouTube from the 50's and 60's, J. D.'s style is very much a clone of Earl. They argue that Don Reno would be a better banjo hero as his style was all his own. But what the hey. Most banjo pickers today have lots of Earl's licks in their playing but most are not a smooth and slick as J. D.!!

@tjbanjo Jimmy Martin's band was The Sunny Mountain Boys, The Kentucky Mountain Boys was J.D.'s first band that he led.
-
@teakbridge101 Larry Rice played with him too, he mentioned both of them.
-
Many happy memories of the band at the time they played in the Holiday Inn North in Lexington--could not be beat for musicianship.

I used to be so intrigued by him when I was little. He is my Granny's nephew, so I've seen him off and on my whole life. He's an amazing man, and such a sweet guy.

I wonder why he did not mention his time with Jimmy Martin. He was one of the Sunny Mountain Boys, waaaay back in the early 60,s

Actually, it was "The Kentucky Mountain Boys"
he has the most tasteful banjo style out of anyone
