where would you get the soldiers from?

Finding an army is easier than finding someone to play against.

There are many, many types of soldiers to get and in various sizes (scales)

Depends on what era you want to play in. large armies of 1,000's like Napoleonic wars are best played with tiny 10mm guys. 40k and Lord of the Rings are played with 28mm (search out gamesworkshop but many companies make miniatures)
