I've just been looking up this song. It appears it dates back to around 1850.
It was recorded by lots of singers before Hoyt.
I have a soft spot for Eric Anderson's slow version.

Quality so-so. Too bad because this is such a good song. And Southbound is one of the best albums - Hoyt Axton, too, one of the best studio musicians who should have received more accolades.
