Talk Proposal for the 2014 Buddhist Geeks Conference

Dharmatreasure.com

Many teachers have discussed techniques for coping with the so-called Dark Night of the Soul: a period of emotional turmoil or even serious depression that people encounter as their meditation practice deepens and their understanding of emptiness matures. Many see the Dark Night as an inevitable hurdle on the way to Awakening.

But the important thing to know is: it doesn't have to be. You'll have a much easier time if your practice emphasizes stable attention as much as it does mindfulness. The reason is, such practices produce a powerful psychological byproduct: joy, tranquility, and equanimity. These act as a moisturizing lubricant, making it much easier to confront Insights into impermanence, emptiness and suffering.

As a meditator and neuroscientist, I have dedicated my life to creating an in-depth model of the mind, as well as complete step-by-step instructions that cover what to do from your very first sit, all the way to mastery of the deepest absorptions. I've taught enough students to know it's possible to achieve results quickly, and to avoid Dark Nights completely.
