Self Help Africa celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2009. The organisation works with an all-African staff and African partners in nine countries, supporting rural communities to increase food production, have better access to markets, and better chances of earning an income.
Established in the aftermath of the terrible Ethiopian Famine of 1984, Self Help Africa now works in nine countries - Burkina Faso, Togo, Ghana, Zambia, Malawi, Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Eritrea. The organisation also supports communities to have access to savings and credit, to improve local social services including clean drinking water, sanitation, health and education, and provides backing to rural Africans so that they can tackle gender inequality the the challenges presented by HIV/AIDS, and by climate change.

Both of you are wrong, if you ask me:
Mullened, because you clearly have no appreciation of the huge efforts being made by many agencies to improve the lives of poor people in Africa; and Tony, because NGOs aren't the only ones doing anything for Africa - every day of the week ordinary African people are working against seemingly insurmountable difficulties to improve their lives. It sounds to me that a 'self help' charity like this one is exactly the approach that is needed - so WELL DONE !

idiot - a comment from someone who has clearly never been in Africa!
NGOs, both african and international, are the only ones doing anything for Africa.
