@TaiGekTou well I made a mistake,actually Tang Dynasty official language was closer to Fujian dialects rather than Cantonese dialect,Cantonese dialect was actually closest to Song Dynasty official language.

But they always try to protect their people from assimilation they were sucessfull in early days of the empire and little by little failed to achieve a compelte separation even so nothing compare to what Communists aftewards as anny "Praisefull" Communists. The Communists creat the myth of a Single China a Single Chineses as oposed to the Multi Cultural and Multi National realm that was under the Quing and so all other minorities that werent "Chinese" had to go including many times even Han!

@phoenixjade1955 The Manchurians *created* Mandarin. The evidence is in Matteo Ricci's (Italian court official of the Ming Dynasty) dictionary and romanization of Chinese words. All the words that were supposed to have stop consonants such as -p, -t, -k, and -m were still evident in his book, not to mention pronunciation simillar to older Chinese languages like Cantonese and Shanghainese, amongst others. It takes centuries for languages to evolve, but only a couple decades needed to butcher it.
