Here is my submission for a the Life in a Day of my life on the 24th of July, 2010. The submission of for this project by Ridley Scott and Kevin MacDonald. http://www.youtube.com/lifeinaday
Hello my dear students... I'm on vacation right now, which means I am supposed to be relaxing in the sun, having a good time, not doing anything.. especially not working...

BUT.. as most YouTubers in my position know.. it's really hard to stop working.. especially when you love what you do for a living! Like I do!

Now, how about if I told you that the word vacation and vanity.. you know, being stuck up, thinking you are better than everyone.. how about if I told you that the two words come from similar meanings back in old Roman times?

Huh? Does that mean that vacationers are all stuck up, vain people?

HotForWords Must Investigate!

Vacation comes from the Latin word vacare, which means to be empty, where vacant comes from. But, how would vacation come from that?

Well, that's because to be empty also means your plate of things to do.. your plate of duties is also empty.. and for that matter.. your mind is empty and you can relax!

Having a clear mind while on vacation? Well, that sounds about right.

But where does the vanity kick in? Do people get all stuck up, vain, because they are on vacation and others have to work?

Well.. the word vain comes from the Latin word for empty, but this time it comes from the word vanus not vacare, even though it has the same meaning. Vanus made its way into Old French as vein and it meant worthless which became vain in English in the 1300s and still meant worthless.

What's great is that when people were originally called vain, they were being called worthless. Which is great, because when vain later took on the meaning of a false sense of worth, calling someone vain had a double meaning.. not only being accused of having a false sense of worth, but actually being worthless at the same time!

So.. vacation and vanity both came from original meanings of being empty, but vacation ended up meaning being empty of all duties while vanity meant having a false sense of worth, while actually meaning, being worthless!

So.. I guess I can have a vacation without being vain! Phew!

There you go, another mystery solved by your trusty HotForWords.

For your homework, when did you take you last vacation and where did you go?
