Denyce Graves, Gregg Baker, Mary Elizabeth Williams, and the Michigan Opera Theatre Chorus and Orchestra rehearse "A Little More Time," from the opera "Margaret Garner," at the Detroit Opera House, October 2008. Conducted by Stefan Lano, directed by Kenny Leon.

Composer: Richard Danielpour
Librettist: Toni Morrison
Premiered: Detroit 2005 (this video October 2008)

The opera is based on the true story of a slave family's quest for freedom in pre-Civil War America. Margaret Garner briefly escaped with her children from a Kentucky farm in 1856. Upon capture she made the horrific decision to kill her children rather than see them returned to slavery.

  • I wish I could have seen it when it was here in Cincinnati...where the story originated.

  • I got to see Margret Garner this 2008-2009 Season It was wonderful and I loved it.The music was absolutely divine and I am hoping to see more exciting and delightful work from Richard Danielpour as well as the Michigan Opera Theatre.

  • This something for Black History YEAR

  • I am good friends with Richard Danielpour's step son Zack, and a very close friend of his family. Zack and I had the privlage of meeting the entire cast as well as Toni Morrison who is a very sweet person. I am not a huge opera fan but I am more than aware that Margaret Garner was an all orginal idea far from traditional operas...Very interesting.
