The Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Bands (LAGB) allow you to eat less volume of food and fill up quickly, if you make the correct food choices, and that results in less calories. In addition, further weight loss can be achieved with the addition of regular exercise. If you consume too much food you will throw up.

Bands can be inserted in some low risk patients in an outpatient surgery center or they can be inserted in a hospital setting as an outpatient or with an over night stay. The decision regarding the best location to undergo surgery should be discussed with Dr Champion, and will depend on a number of factors like your age, overall health and BMI

The LAGB patients average losing 50% of their excess weight (their preop body weight minus their ideal body weight) and 50% are "successful" long term (means they keep 50% of their excess weight off for 5 years).
