  • Kenpo has always been an interesting and effective martial art but its too tense and you have to build up adrenaline when being attacked. The best way to defend yourself if attacked is to be in a relaxed state and utilize your inner power rather than "brute force" that is Karate. You will have just as much power, if not more with much less effort if you are relaxed. Wing Chun is a perfect example of this. :)

  • i've seen some of his other videos before, great martial artist. he doesn't abuse of the shoulder check. now that you mention that part of its purpose is to keep the hand in action, it actually makes sense to do it a couple of times, it's a good "tactic" but not strictly necessary. the guy in this vid, on this page, is over doing it, imo. he doesn't use his left hand for anything else than shoulder checking and i'll never believe in that counter forcing stuff, i don't see it in any other art

  • @tried12usernames i want to also show you larry tatum teaching a seminar. he clearly shows you the "shoulder check" to keep the left hand in action as a minor hit eyes/throat/nose in between the obscure elbow. the shoulder checks prime purpose is to stop the impact of the strike from hitting a soft/vital target on a person as well as "keep it in the action" the videos are: Larry Tatum - BKKU Exeter Part 1 01:52 "shoulder check" Larry Tatum - BKKU Exeter Part 2 03:11 "down chop with check"

  • @tried12usernames what i will do is create a video on "shoulder checking" and explain its values and uses and post it on my my website/youtube channel. give me a few days. thanks..

  • @kenpomasters the five swords vid is excellent, so is paul mills's. directional harmony, whipping motion, intensity and other concepts that are common to most martial arts are all spoken of and i agree with all of that. still don't see how shoulder checking could be a part of cancelling forces (paul mills stresses the knees movement there). it still very much seems like a slap and some sort of tic that you get from practicing.

  • @tried12usernames

paul mills video is titled " Paul Mills American Kenpo Energy Video Clip" 5:19 long

jeff speakmans video is titled " jeff speakman five swords" 5:46 long

it will comeup when you search for it.

  • @kenpomasters i know, that, i did that. even just copied the watch?v=... and i couldn't get anywhere

  • @tried12usernames youtube wont let you copy and paste a link in the comment area. just add w-w-w. infront of each clip in your address bar and they should work.. :)

  • @kenpomasters tried copy pasting those links, but they didn't work

  • @tried12usernames there are 2 kinds of practicioners in american kenpo. speed or flow hittiing (considered slap art) & energy/power based american kenpo. the second is harder to master. here is jeff speakman and paul mills doing " shoulder checks" to cancel out energy and check the depth of the strike.

  • @kenpomasters tip: stop worrying about your ligaments, they can take much more than just the force of own body movement. you don't need to demonstrate things like that. from your reply i took that it's only for canceling the energy you produce and that you don't want to hurt your assistant with that. i'm guessing you don't want to hurt yourself either so stop hitting yourself and stop believing that "shoulder checking" will save your ligaments. do you see karateka shoulder checking in kata? NO
