SNL: Miley Cyrus Wasn't Pretty Cool

Miley Cyrus was the host of SNL this week (Saturday, March 5th, 2011) but it might just have well been Charlie Sheen who hosted given the amount of airtime they show's writers gave to the imploding star of Two and a Half Men.

Sheen was the center of the shows cold opener, the Monologue by Miley Cyrus, and a large chunk of Weekend Update.
The show was fairly good but could really have been great if only Miley Cyrus had the least bit of comedic talent. The impersonation she did of Justin Bieber wasn't up to the great make-up job the crew did on her or the really funny material the writers gave her but which she bungled.
Saturday Night Live is the most erratic show on Television.
One week its brilliant, the next week its so so, and the next week its just plain terrible.
And then it's back to brilliant again.
And when the show is lucky they'll get a guest host on who will really help them to elevate their game, you know, the way Betty White did last season.
But then there are also weeks like this one where Miley Cyrus is the host of a halfway decent show, which could have been a great one if only she could act.
And that was no more evident than in the impersonation she did of Justin Beiber in the show's recurring Miley Cyrus Show parody.
She actually did look quite a bit like Bieber, but her complete lack of timing and comedic talent dragged down a sketch that was good but could have been great.
I mean, her performance was so lacking that by rights NBC could have announced that Charlie Sheen had been the actual host -- jokes about him got almost as much airtime on the show as Cyrus did --
And I'm also willing to wager that Miley may not have been the easiest Host SNL has ever had to work with. If you watch the closing moments of the show where the host is always surrounded by the cast they've worked with all week, hugging and laughing together, you see here that only the Strokes, the shows music guest, get close enough to touch her. The broadcast ended with Cyrus center stage, her back to the audience and no one from the cast even looking her way.
When's the last time you saw that happen?
