Corals live in a partnership with single-celled algae known as zooxanthellae. Coral bleaching occurs when this relationship breaks down under stressful conditions - such as higher-than-normal sea temperatures - and the coral host expels its zooxanthellae. With the algae and the pigments they contain gone, the coral tissue is left transparent, revealing the bright white skeleton beneath.

  • GREAT VIDEO!!! EDUCATION IS THE KEY TO SAVING OUR REEFS. The Aquarium of Niagara (Niagara Falls, NY) is in the running for a grant through the Pepsi Refresh Project. The goal is to build an educational reef display, as well as start a coral propagation program. In order to get the grant they need people to vote for their project.

You can vote by texting 102344 To: 73774 (PEPSI) or get more info by searching "Niagara Reef" on Facebook.
