I'll side with Rocketboy. Aus. does hold the record with their Iron Ore unit trains. Distances are shorter and commuters are more impatient in California. Somebody would blow up that train at a crossing before it finished lol.

Not really, it's fairly flat country and they are 4000hp each.

If i had a dollar for every tonne of freight on that train I would be a very rich man

@EMDSD14R Got it, looked em up on Wikipedia. Nice detailed description there.

@Rocketboy1950 oh i made a mistake on how much amtrak its spending..its 466 mill..not 62 mill..sorry about tht..the AEM7AC's are also so strong they can pull a 12 car train..but they use two units on some of the longer trains...i see them everyday where i live..Septa also runs them but they've kept theres straight DC..oh cool u have some shot of them..i would recommend u making a trip back here cause they won't be running for much longer..plus i think u'll like the humm of the AC version

@Rocketboy1950 oh i understand..i'll give u a quick up date....the HHP8's have been running with the AEM7's for 10 years or so...all the AEM7's are now called AEM7AC's..amtrak rebuilt them all...the HHP8's replaced the E60's which was a huge mistake tht amtrak made....amtrak is now replaceing both the HHP8's and the AEM7AC's with the new engine called ACS64 which is based off of locomotives tht are used in europe..type in the name and u'll see it...i don't like the look of it at all
-
@EMDSD14R Are you saying ( might have a crossed line here ) that the HHP8's are replacing the AEM7's which as I understand it were a huge success. I don't follow the US scene quite like I did 20 or 30 years back so not totally in touch with what is happening. I might have some shots of them both from my very brief visit to NJ and NY a few years back.

@Rocketboy1950 our Little Joe electric's had 36 notches..we ran them in multiple with diesels..they were something..atleast 3 are presevered and one unit still runs..i've seen vid of the English Electric's.. i like them alot...the way they sound is really cool...and u got to drive em...man tht must have been an amazing thing..are any of those still around and if so do any musuems still run them once in awhile?. the Class A diesel's are also really cool..anything tht looks/sounds cool i like
-
@Rocketboy1950 well yes but the electric's tht replace them..the (HHP8's) are worse..matter fact they even though they have AC/higher hp they brake down more often and have to be towed by diesels..the E60's never had tht problem..if they did it was rare..now amtrak is spending 62 mill to replace the HHP8's which are barely 10..the new engine is based off of ones used in Europe..good thing is tht second generation E60's are still running..yeah i would love to see an E44/GG1 run..nothing like em
-
@EMDSD14R wouldn't you scrap something if you could replace it with something half the size and better. But yeah it's a shame to see any of them go but it's good that one was preserved. I mean I would love to see a GG1 or an E44 but alas wrong time, wrong place. I do love electric locomotives and used to get a big kick out of driving our English Electrics that we once had down here. Nothing quite like making then hum as you wind out on a 36 notch controller.
The railway line that goes from Adelaide to Alice Springs; is the line extended to Darwin now and has Australia increased rail lengths to towns? And does passenger trains like the Ghan which have older locomotives and older streamline carriages, have they been upgraded to newer engines and double-deck coaches like in the United States (example: Amtrak - rail passenger service)?

@jmm2000 The line goes to Darwin. I have no idea what the arrangements are for passengers going to intermediate towns. It is still hauled by Pacific National NR class locos and there are no double deck passenger cars in Australia other than Sydney suburban commuters.
