Imagine two disks, spinning at 1000 rpm in opposite directions on the same axle - you push them together and they'll grind to a halt releasing all that energy. Why - because they spin pushing against each other.

Magnets have electrons whose spins are aligned - like the atoms in the disk.

First, this is Richard Feynman, Nobel Prize winner and perhaps of the last great theoretical physicists of the 20th century. I'm pretty sure he knows how a magnet works.

And the point he was trying to make is that yes, he could explain it in terms of ferromagnetism, micro-crystalline structures, magnetic domains and atomic magnetic moments (and would be correct), but no actual information would be imparted because the interviewer has no appreciation for those concepts.
