This was just a bare bones experiment to see if we could use a copper electrode without getting green gunk. Na(2)CO3 electrolyte.

  • Sure, you can use copper, but wont it degrade at a much faster rate?

If you had a way to pass water over/around/through it and filter the water as it went, that might be one thing...but I would imagine that the gunk is going to be, what once was, the electrode itself.

  • hmmm probably so. It looked like the copper electrode was getting coated though. The copper turned dark grey. I could be wrong.

  • How many amps?

  • Using sodium carbonate+water, stainless steel for the positive and copper for the negative. Works very well. Sodium carbonate also know as, soda ash, washing soda, sold as PH boost for swimming pools. It makes a base solution with water and is safer than acids or KOH.
