He needs to hold the tubing closer to the tip with his right hand and squeeze to make it easier to connect to the cannula. Takes lots of practice. Also @ tinky 246, there's really no need to hold it in a saline bath....it would probably be successful, but it's not really convenient.
It is very easy if one person slowly opens the clamp on patients cannula while the other patient is connecting. If there are some smaller bubbles in the tubing und the inflow-cannula you an open all clamps before starting the pump. Then you´ll have a backflow (veno-arterial-system) an bubbles will be trapped in the oxygenator.
i know you are trying to not include air bubble, but could this have been done under a container with the saline or whichever liquid you are injecting to connecting the cannula?
